Eclipse of 2024: Learning from the Signs

 

                Spiritual food for thought regarding numbers, math, and the eclipse of April 8th, 2024. Let me guide you to some thoughts that are spiritual in nature and not just physical. The Date April 8th, 2024 in the Gregorian Calendar is a date based on the Sun calendar. The Hebrew date was the 29th Day of Adar II and the next day April 9th being Nissan 1st (new month new moon). Just like every 4 years we have a leap year (an extra day added to the month of February as in the 29th) this past Eclipse day was a leap year in the Jewish calendar. The Jewish calendar on same date is 29 Adar II, 5784. Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Wow, think about how long ago that was. The calendar was a reform of the Julian calendar, which had been implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. The Julian calendar had fallen out of sync with the seasons because it miscalculated the length of the solar year by 11 minutes. Ok, too much information, but bear with me for a minute on calendars and times.

Just as every 4 years we have a leap year (extra day in February) so the Jews also have a leap year (extra day in their month called Adar II which was our April 8^th 2024. It might always fall in the same month, but it was added to the month of Adar II this year. The Next day was called Nissan 1^st being the first day of their next month called Nisan.  So, on the leap year day in the Jewish calendar the Moon and Sun crossed in the sky to get our attention over north America as we were looking to the signs in the heavens. Jesus told us people seek signs." An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed. Matthew 16:4 But In Genesis scriptures also tells us “And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years.”  Matthew 24:29 Jesus said. “ “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Some believe this already happened, while others believe it is yet to happen. Perhaps its both as we continue to unfold and look to the natural world for spiritual signs of our times. So on one hand Jesus an adulteress generation seeks signs, but God has also said the celestial bodies are signs including for seasons , days and years. 

                              In Christian circles there were lots of humor, rumors and even mocking, as well as serious comments about the end times, the rapture of the church and the last days. Was this eclipse a sign to the world or to North America? Was it just another eclipse of many or a sign of the many we have seen and never see. Seven years ago, there was an eclipse over North America that streaked across the county in the opposite direction and this year the opposite direction and if you over lay the two, they mark an X over North America. Some call this a sign of repentance to America while others just see science and give it not much more thought. All about the science here

               For the spiritual minded we must realize the true Resurrection Passover celebration of Jesus dying for the sins of the world is more accurate to be commentated on the Jewish calendar which would make Passover not on a Sunday the 31^st of March, but our April 22^nd, 2024. I know the majority of the Christian world celebrated it on the 31^st. I do not get to hung up on when we celebrate his resurrection, but I’m more pleased we have a date we do acknowledge in or culture to remember that glorious event of our salvation history. They say I was born on March 11^th and who am I to debate it, since I can’t recall it. So likewise, I am persuaded Jesus rose from the dead on a Jewish Holy week called Passover and I believe it regardless of what day in an given year it falls to whichever calendar we live our daily lives. He lives and He’s alive and coming back and that makes me excited to meet him face to face some glorious day.

 So here are some numbers and dates to think and wonder about. Are we seeing signs and if so, what is God saying in these signs in recent days?   

In 1948 Israel was established as a nation again. The earthquake in NJ was on April 4^th, 2024, with a magnitude of “4.8” that happened at the same time the folks in the UN a few miles away were debated the war in Israel as the building shock. Was that God's way of using nature to speak to humanity? Then a few days later on 4.8.24 North America experienced a total solar eclipse. What did that mean as it related to Israel, the times, the attention it drew? 

Are these consequences as secularist scientist would say or signs in the heavens as God has said they were to be?  What is God saying by his signs using nature to say it to us?  God uses nature to speak to humanity about spiritual things and we should be trying to understand what is saying. 

What is God speaking to the Church, to the world and to the Jews?  

Before we get to caught up in dates and eclipses be aware of some of this math that is not commonly known. Every 6 months there is an eclipse of the Sun to Earth for a solar eclipse and every 6 months there is a sun, earth moon for a lunar eclipse. So, there is a solar and lunar eclipse every 6 months somewhere on the planet. According to the Gregorian calendar, leap years are years that are divisible by four, with the exception of every 100 years when the leap day is skipped. For example, 1800 and 1900 are not leap years, but 2000 is, while 1700, 1800, 1900, and 2100 are not. However, every 400 years, the rule is reversed, and a leap day is added again. Every 19 years the Hebrew calendar syncs with the solar Gregorian calendar. We gain 1 full day every 333 years of time and every 28 years the sun is where it was when God created it 9 according to Jewish history.  With all these spinning signs and planets, I hope your mind did not spin off course too much as mine did. So, measuring time on the planet is difficult and different systems are often being adjusted and when Jesus said “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. Matthew 24:36. I now see why I need to trust what Jesus said.  Yes, the stars and planets spinning are to be signs to us, but likely we will never know for certain the day, month or hour of His return. I am ok with! 

               Another interesting timing event this past week was the ending of the Muslim holy fast of Ramadan that is declared by two witnesses in Saudi Arabia seeing the crescent moon.  Apparently, there was a mis declaration that caused some confusion on it ending on April 8^th or 9^th. But again, perhaps another sign to the spiritually minded. 

As you read this to the end you might be thinking, what is the conclusion of this post. It is that we should not jump to conclusions and date setting can be dangerous and easily off course unless you really know more about dates, times, calendars, and scriptures.

How to Make Extra Money in 2020 with Amazon, Mercari or Poshmark with cash Investment

Do remember  life before the internet?  Wow, I am getting old.  I have always been an entrepreneur at heart and my wife can verify that. I have done all kinds of crazy side gigs to support our large family while pastoring over the past 30 years. When baby number one came along in 1991 my wife  wanted to stay home and that meant this full time youth pastor  had to moonlight another job to make ends meet. I started off with a newspaper route. What's a newspaper you might ask? Do they even do that anymore?  After trashing my car with thousands of extra miles I started driving a school bus  for extra cash and that was far more interesting. Then after a season of that for a few years I moved to selling  stuff through network marketing companies including one called Excel that sold long distance services to landline home phones. What you might ask, "did people really sell long distance services"? Yep, and I would sell it to you.  Then I went back to the school bus driving job when the company folded. I also  drove a dump truck for an asphalt company part time for a season, then I hung my hat up on driving jobs after a short season of being a charter bus driver.

             When the internet arrived opportunities began with companies like eBay. eBay was one of the first great ways to make money online.  In the year 2000 I started selling video email and live streaming services.  It was then that I sold over $80,000 worth of services in 4 years. That was pretty amazing at the time. Now streaming is free and what is video email? huh. 

       I took my turn at eBay and did pretty good for a few years prior to the year 2000. But I never got very aggressive about it, but it worked. I remember one item in particular I sold was a piece of stain glass window to someone in China for $600 plus shipping. Wow that was strange sale. Then Amazon came to my attention in 2015. My wife was selling off used home school books when I started digging into how it all worked. I will spare you the details in this post, but the summary is I failed for the first 6 months and finally started to figure it out and made around  $1,500 by the end of my first year.  Now remember Amazon has fees,  so when people say I sold so much on Amazon that is not what they actually made.  The average commission they keep is 15% and depending on how much you have invested you can figure for every $1000 someone says they made or sold on amazon they actually made approx $150,00 plus whatever their investment was,  In my first year I sold used books that I got for free or very cheap.  Amazon started by the owner selling used books online out of his garage  and today books are still a foundation item sold on Amazon. 

             

              In 2016 I sold $26,500 worth of used books. Then in 2017 I sold over $66,000 and started selling different things I would find at yard sales , garage sales and auctions. Well the figures just keep scaling up if you keep feeding the machine.  It's become a fun business, but unless I outsource parts of it in 2020 I think I've probably reached my peak as a one man operation. The irony is I actually spend less time managing  and running it now then I did the first two years. I think I spend maybe 20 hours a month to run what has become a very well working silent sales machine.

         I do find myself collecting a lot of junk along the way. I love auctions and go almost weekly.  It is sheer entertainment for me no doubt.  My biggest win at the auction was some guys toy collection in the spring of 2019.  I paid  $2000.00 over 3 weeks of returning to the auction for new toys that were collectibles. I made back my $2000 investment by July and then another $4000 or more leading up to Christmas. Wow I have fun with my side gig business and no more driving the school bus or throwing newspapers at doors.  It has become a blessing to help pay off debts and keep my kids in a Christian College.  

       In the last 3 years I have coached 7 people on how to sell on Amazon and only one of them dropped off after 7 months and said that it was not for them.  What I have liked the most about selling online is I never had to invest anything to make it work other then my time. Most businesses take a hefty investment.  With Amazon you can either pay nothing to sell from your home or pay $39.99 a month to have the opportunity to send your things  into their warehouse so they ship it to the customer. This is what truly inspired me to start selling with Amazon. The program actually started in 2006 and when I started it was only a 10 year old program.  So this past year in 2019 I have sold on Amazon 13,801 separate orders to customers.  There is no way I could have personally shipped that many items, but with Amazon shipped them for me it is well worth 39.99 a month. Typically I send in a few boxes of multiple items once a month  or I call UPS to pick up at my house 25-40 boxes of items and then I am done shipping.      

       Things I can't sell on Amazon that I often get from the auctions are numerous now. But I also do not want to throw them away or donate everything I can't sell.   I will admit I have donated way more to charity then I ever expected because of auctions. Simple estate auctions are a fun mystery I thoroughly enjoy.   In 2019 I finally hired a CPA  and a virtual assistant to help me figure the details out because things are growing faster then the time I want to give to it.  I love being a pastor so I don't want to give more than 20 hours a month. I have read dozens of books, articles and watched tons of videos on how to sell better and smarter.  I truly see this as being a life long hobby of selling online into retirement.  When it's fun its not work! 

        I've been told its harder to start an Amazon business today then it was 5 years ago. I believe that is somewhat true because they do verify who is selling more then ever to make sure you are not trying to set up a fraudulent account. But once you are approved and you follow their rules its a beautiful thing.  Recently my adult daughters told me about two other sites they sell used and new clothes on for extra cash.  One is Poshmark ( I have still yet to figure that one out well) and the other is Mercari.  Poshmark keeps 20% and Mercari keeps 10% of sales.   I started using Mercari over 1 month ago to sell stuff off I could not send into Amazon and didn't really want to donate away to thrift stores. In this short time I have made over 500.00 in selling off stuff I could not  sell on Amazon. 

          If you want to get a sense of selling online I would recommend Mercari over Amazon to start off with. It is super easy and cost you nothing until you sell something and then it is only 10% of your sale in commission. It works best from their phone app over their website and you can literally work your way into enjoying online sales or not pretty fast. Mercari is also heavily advertising on TV and other places and I believe will be the next eBay within a few years.

What Does God Have Planned For You?

      In this life we have choices and we always will. Our God did not create us as puppets with strings attached, but rather with a free will to choose every day.  The first significant choice we have is will we trust God with our sins. Let’s admit it, we all sin and the Bible confirms this when the Apostle Paul wrote”for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23.  Do we agree with God’s Word that we have sinned against God?  

           

     

When I was growing up as a young man in Maine my parents would take me to Catechism but they didn’t live it out like it was real to them so it was not real to me either. By the time I was 11 they just stopped going to Mass. I remember my sins well and how real to me they became. How I dealt with my sins was to ignore them and not listen to my conscience.  I lied to my parents, stole money from my dad’s wallet among many other things. Within a few years I was running with the wrong crowd of kids that did even worse things. I was sinning against my family and against God’s standards for my life. I knew better but didn’t really care. 

          I willfully lived in increasing sins against God until I was 19 years old. It was then that I was faced with my own eternal reality. Did I want to admit my sins to God and ask Him to forgive me or did I want to ignore God and His plan to forgive me? I knew true forgiveness from God meant truly willing to stop all the sinning.  I became aware that the plan of God was to truly forgive me, but my part was to really be willing to stop the sinning as well.  If I was willing to stop sinning then God had a plan for me. I remember weighing out my sinful deeds & behaviors in my mind and deciding if I was willing to really stop sinning or not.  It was the biggest choice I faced as a teenager. I decided to walk away from sinful behaviors and walk toward God by faith. Those choices led to different friends, different jobs and a new church and seeking out what God planned for me.  

          At that stage of my life it became what God wanted me to do next. Since I was young it was education. God wanted to educate me more, now that my mind and heart were cleared out of the influence of drugs.  God gave me choices and I followed the ones I sensed would please Him and I desired. God was changing my desires and giving me the desires of my heart.  I didn’t know exactly what He had planned for me but I followed the path that kept opening up before my eyes. That path took me to 3 colleges before finally graduating where I met my wife. God had plans for me and I was trying to follow them and He kept leading me so I kept following what He revealed over 6 years. I believed God has plans for everyone at every age and stage of life. If you are willing to let go of your sins he will can and will change your life from the inside out. If we are willing to follow His plan and listen to Him, while maintaining a clean conscience and a pure heart He will reveal an wonderful plan for your life no matter what the past has been.  

          In my 6th year of college I meet the love of my life and married her. We celebrate 30 years together this month. What plans did God now have for us together?  Yes God has plans for couples as much as singles and He can lead people together to discover his plans and purposes.  We both wanted 4 children and God gave us a bonus and we have 5 children.  God now has plans for their lives as we have taught them to seek God and his plan for their lives.  

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

God has a plan for you as well. It starts with forgiven of sins and progresses in a wonderful journey.  Does this mean you and I will not have to experience pain and suffering? The answer to that is no. Pain and suffering happens to all of us with or without God in our daily lives.  Since we live in a fallen world full of others who do not seek God and choose to live in their sins, then we will suffer at various times and seasons. God has plans for you and can restore and make a way even when there seems to be no way. 

     

Seek the Lord and see what he has in store for your days. He loves you, he died and rose again for you and has plans for you.  “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.””

Pastor, What Do You Do For Fun?

   I was talking to a pastor friend this week and he mentioned how many pastors he knew who by the time they retired had nothing to do because all they did was pastor their entire ministry.  So now I want to ask Pastors young and old alike what do we do that’s fun?     

                I’m in my 50’s and have been a pastor since I was 27 years old. I have officially pastored as long as I’ve been married for 28 years. Before I started pastoring I had a bunch of different things I enjoyed. Let me list them briefly. I loved hiking, snow skiing, racquetball, swimming, baseball, softball, golf, camping and dirt bikes. Dirt bikes graduated into street bikes and camping graduated to mission trips.  I collected baseball cards as a kid and loved to ride dirt bikes and go four wheeling. I fished a lot as a kid through my teen years and found deep sea fishing to be a fun treat.  Bowling was another fun sport I did on occasion and even rolling skating some as well. 

                                Then I got married and became a pastor and had 5 kids and life shifted from being a youth pastor to a senior pastor. As time marched on I gave up the dirt bike for a street bike, went to less baseball games and started playing softball in church leagues.  In the last 28 years I have fished far less. In the last 8 years I think I have fished 4 times, sold my motorcycle twice in 8 year. I have not gone skiing at all in 20 years and bowled twice in a decade and don’t collect anything other than junk as my wife says. She's right the garage is full.

                      I know as we all get older some of my interest can change, but I honesty I still love baseball, swimming, hiking and some of the above things mentioned that I don't do because i've gotten too busy. But as I’ve aged and my kids have aged I have discovered how I have decreasingly done less of the things I enjoy. I would say much of that has been due to keeping up with the demands of church and family. But now I am realizing the things we like give us energy for the things we are called to as well.  

                                Recently I sent out an email to a large group of pastors about who wants to attend a professional basketball game for a night of fun. I got two responses back from the youngest of 40 pastors. Their responses ranged from I can’t that week, but I’d love too.  The older guys have not responded at all. I realize some pastors can’t afford it and some are busy and others probably do not like basketball, but I would venture to say the majority just have such full schedules that it just sounded exhausting to make the effort to go do another thing.  

                So what do we do for fun? How often do we do things for fun and is doing fun stuff for ourselves that important anymore?  Sometime fun things require we react spontaneously. About 5 years ago a man from my church walked into my office and said, " pastor I got an extra spot on a western Caribbean cruise if you can figure it out within 24 hours". That day I had a luncheon with a Catholic Priest who I had befriended in our community. Over Lunch I told him how I had an offer to do something I had always wanted to do, but never had the time and money.  He said what is stopping you from going? That was a great question and the more I thought about it the more fun it was to entertain the idea. After lunch I went home and asked my wife what she thought if I could pull it off. She encouraged me to take one of my week vacations and just do it.  I wrestled that day with guilt and joy. In the end I found someone to preach for me and cover my tracks for 7 days and I went and enjoyed the best fun 7 day cruise ever and to date the only cruise ever.  Pastors we need to have fun and sometimes we need to plan it in advance and other times fun will arise out of nowhere and we either jump on it and enjoy it or miss the adventure.  

                I have lived in my community for 8 years now. Before I moved here I use to play racquetball about 6 times a year. I have only played once in the last 8 years and the priest whipped but good.  I realize as we get older we can’t always do what we use to do physically or as well as we once did it, but maybe it’s because we give up our fun stuff for being so busy that we “think’ we don’t have the energy to do it anymore. 

                Pastor I encourage you to look at your past and your present and keep doing the fun things that thrill you, energize you and motivate you.  If you are too busy to do something you enjoy at least once a month then you are too busy with too many things.  Let’s not make the fun things we enjoy become a faded memory, but a recent activity.  Please don’t forget to enjoy life along the journey. Make 2018 a fun year of enjoying those things you use to do and long to do again. A happy pastor who enjoys the journey has more to give when the schedule gets demanding.  Go have some Fun!

  How often do most Christians witness to the power and grace of Jesus Christ in their lives? I believe the safe answer is not often enough.  Witnessing is not easy on a regular basis. We get busy and caught up in the daily grind of life and probably forgot to witness more then we ought to. 

Last week just before Pentecost I realized it was my 36^th anniversary of when I accepted Christ into my life. So I decided to record a quick 3 minute video summary of what Jesus did for me 36 years ago. It was easy to share because its my story.  Only God knows what He will do with that 3 minute testimony as it sits on the internet and people find it, watch it and hopefully someone is encouraged to seek Jesus because of it.  But the video was intentional. A week later I looked at it and it has been shared over 15 times on other peoples Facebook page and viewed over 1300 times.  Those 1300 plus views equals 65 hours of video testimony being seen. That is equal to me telling my story of 3 minutes for 3 days straight. Now this is really mind blowing.  Here is the link if you want to see that video

  I realize not everyone feels comfortable in front of a camera and this is not everyone’s first choice on how to witness. This week I meet some urban missionaries from the United States. Before I left them they handed me their written testimony within 3 paragraphs. I thought this is such a great low tech way to share your testimony as well when out in the market place. We use to call them tracts, but I like the idea of making up your own story with a way to  connect back.  Imagine being in the drive thru line and handing the cashier the money for your order and a piece of paper like mine below. Again this is INTENTIONAL EVANGELISM.  If we do not intentional witness who will?  We are commissioned by Jesus to Go  and Witness by the Power of the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” I hope these ideas inspire you to create your own  ways of witnessing even when you are busy.  By all means that we might save some..

A Mom Much loved!

       It's May 5th 2017. I just flew up to New England a few days ago to be a part of a ceremony where my mom was being recognized as the oldest citizen in Boxborough, MA. The Award goes back to 1909 when the Editor of the Boston Post created a movement that continues today. In that day he had 700 Canes made worth approx $1000 each made of gold and ebony.  Today this tradition continues in New England in over 400 towns.   The pictures below were taken by a friend of the family named Peggy.  It was a simple and fun formal presentation at the City Hall.  I do not see my mom much and that is a frustration for me personally, but I am so glad I could make this event yesterday.  I live 1500 miles away and even talking on the phone now has become difficult for her. So the in person visits now are so cherished.  

           It's not Mothers Day yet, but I write this post to honor my mom and hopefully she will read this on Mother's Day when I am back in Florida.  To have ones mom into your 50's may not be unusual for many, but for me it is since my mom has lived longer then many women to the age of almost 98. She turns 98 on June 15th and will be featured in the local parade on June 17th as the oldest person in Boxborough. They want her to attend as many local community functions as possible throughout the year. I believe that alone will keep her focused on her new civic duty. She's not real thrilled about being the oldest in town and I get what she means by that, but nonetheless she is a beautiful woman at her age.  She still has clarity of thought, amazing retrieval of memory from decades past and a fun sense of humor. She can eat big meals and loves her cup of tea. She still gets out and walks and loves flowers and lobster.  She is a New England tradition for me and many others and has out lived all her relatives who are older then she.  I do not know know many years she might still have, but then none of us know our own either.   What a joy it has been to visit with her. She plays games, reads and loves her cat Bunny. Bunny is a Maine coon cat that she has had for 18 years. She use to attend church regularly, but rarely does she get up before noon now, but she doe still go, but not as often. When she could attend she hears very little unless you are next to her and even then its a struggle for her. I love my mom and her love of life. Before I left today she said she was going to charter a private plane and take all her family to Hawaii for her 100th birthday. That story is 2 years away so we shall see. Love ya mom.

Each week we would encourage you to fast and pray at least one meal leading up to this study/ reflection time or make this Friday season that fast of a meal in seeking the Lord. We also encourage you to invite someone who does not have a faith community that they attend. Spend the next seven week or the next 40 Days from March 1st through April 9th in a special season of prayer and fasting seeking to hear a fresh revelation from our Savior while praying for those who do not walk by faith with him yet. Each week we will notify you as to the next week Location of the service. We will start and end the seven weeks in the church building with communion. Profanity is a Destroyer!

                                When I was growing up as a young man the first foul language I was exposed to was sexual vulgarity in middle school. I would never speak the words I heard among my school and neighborhood friends at home and I certainly do not ever recall my parents using those words in their conversation or anger.  The worse words I recall my parents use were the words Damn and Hell (abbreviation for condemnation to Hell). When I heard those words they were never used in the context of speaking about God and spiritual matters.  When I asked Jesus to forgive me of my sins  and received the Lord as my personal Savior I discovered how foul mouthed I actual was and how I needed to change my word choices.  This was not something anyone had to teach me as the Lord taught me the next day. But it took me weeks to train my thinking to stop using those words.  There are really only three categories of vulgar and profane language that mankind will ever really use. I will share that a little later, but no matter what language in the world you speak there are only three categories  of cursing, profanity and vulgarity  that humanity uses in the futility of their thinking.  

                The Bible was written in Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament).  In the Old Testament one of the commands of God to Moses was to not take the Lord God’s name in vain. The Jews regarded God’s name so holy that not only did they avoid using His name even in context. They dropped vowels from his name to not say it exactly as He name is. Because of that we have the name Jehovah as part of His original name.  A Jewish Rabbi named Daniel Lapin notes that the Hebrew language is derived from God and God’s Word and there are actually no Hebrew curse words in the language.  He says if a present day Hebrew speaking Jew wants to curse he has to borrow words from other languages like Arabic. It is interesting that the third command in exodus 20 is that we are not to misuse the name of the Lord. So why is that? When I am in a group of people and I hear someone invoke my name “for Pete’s sake” I turn my head because I hear my name.  In the Old Testament names had meanings and people lived up their names. In the New Testament Jesus said that our yes was to be yes and our no was to be no. We are not to bear false witness for our “Words” has meanings and definitions and they invoke power. Matthew 12:24 say for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(NIV) Psalms 34:13 says ; keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking evil. ESV

                Recently I was talking with missionaries from a French speaking country. Somehow we got discussing words and their meanings. No matter what the language or the sound of the word there are just three areas we invoke profanity, vulgarity and cursing. You see as humans we communicate with our words. We plan act innocent of the words we choose or we may truly be ignorant, but basically most people know what they are saying when they curse.  The more words we know the better we can communicate.   The bible says that we speak from the heart and that death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat of its fruits. Proverbs 18:21.

                                Public cursing and vulgarity began to be release through TV and the air ways back in the 1960’s. Prior to that what the public heard was clean and wholesome speech for the most part. Today our entire nation is being polluted with sick talk and language on every corner, but the biggest tragedy is that it has slide into the Church of the Jesus Christ.  We even have pastors in our generation who drop profane words for shock value and use sexual slang as common speech.  Even the smallest children who are not even mature enough to do the things they speak of have become common. We as the Church of Jesus Christ need to turn around our nation and make our nation holy again.

   

             Those who are reading this know that we are not redeemed but rules or laws, but yet rules and laws are to be written on the tablets of our hearts when we receive the Holy Spirit. Paul was writing to the believers in Ephesus when he noted how they were to put off the old self and put on the new self. In Eph 4:17 Paul says that we are not to live like the gentiles do in the futility of their thinking.  I have heard people make up words that sound like curse words as if that is better. How we think is how we talk and how we talk is what our thinking heart is made of.  Watch a dozen movies a month with vulgarity and cursing and you increase your probability to think and talk like that.  When I first became a Christian my pastor taught us that we should turn off our TV’s or walk out of a movie that took God’s name in vain or used vulgar language. Why has the church lowered the standard on speech and language?

                There are three areas of profanity in life that are to be private, honorable and protected. When we use words or substitute words similar to words associated with these three areas in defaming ways then we are speaking with the futility of our minds. The first area is when we speak of sexuality among men or women or in mixed company where we mock, belittle or berate others or speak of such sexual acts that dishonor the marriage bed. When we tear down another human being with sexual language we are succumbing to futility thinking of the godless. When we speak of any of the sexual parts of the human anatomy is such a way to dishonor it, make humor of it or use slang about it we are profaning what God created and intended to be private between a male and female. Sexuality is to be sacred, holy beautiful and respectable. The words we use in our conversations matter in all relationships. How we talk in business, in friendships and in marriage determines success and failure. If you curse daily and then go to a job interview and intentionally try not to curse your mind with struggle with proper replacement words and will reflect in your ability to communicate quickly and promptly.  God wants you to start thinking and talking like He thinks and talks. James says, who can tame the tongue? Man can’t, but God can because with God all things are possible. Read Paul’s admonishment in Eph 4:29, but read the whole paragraph.  We are to be different and to even think different than those lost souls in our world.

                

          The second category of profanity is vulgarizing bathroom talk. When we use words and slang in any language that reflects the things we do in the bathroom by way of excrement we miss the mark of how God intends us to communicate with one another. Urine and feces have been hijacked into all kinds of slang and vulgar terms to express other experiences and frustrations of life that have nothing to do with such. It might be a figure of speech to some, but its vulgar and rude and futile thinking.  Last of all, but certainly not least is the taking of the Names of God in vain.  He is Holy and all His names are Holy. When we use God’s names as an expression of shock, excitement, surprise or fear when we are not actually calling upon Him then we are cursing against heaven, breaking a covenant commandment and diminishing our reputation among men.  

                                Eternity is real and so is God, heaven, hell and the final judgment.  As an example, when we say things like “oh My God” we may not mean what we say, but we said it as a vain expression. We do these types of things for a variety of reasons from being lazy, conforming to others, lack of vocabulary or lacking control of our emotions.  Only God can and will condemn a soul or a devil to a place of torment. If we really wanted God to condemn someone then we obviously do not understand the character of God.

                                A few weeks ago I was in a small cafe in Watkinsville, Ga. I was having a cup of coffee and reading and studying. People came and left and then I was the only customer in the room. At that point this man came in from outside. He obviously had been eating on the porch. He came in and started cursing at the owner about his meal. He used sexual foul language repeatedly and loud about his bad experience with his hamburger.  He did not care that a customer was there and even said that he did not care that I was there. He really lacked words to express his anger and he did not stop for like 4 minutes. He insulted the owner and even when he was offered a refund he kept at it with vulgar obscene language.  Within a few minutes the owner was crying and he was apologizing and refusing to take his refund.  It was really bad, but this stuff happens all the time across our nation in public as no other generation ever has had to endure. We are reaping as a nation 50 years of increased vulgarity in our media and entertainment. This man’s language and behavior was coming from his futile thinking in his mind. While this was going on I was praying.  Before he left the restaurant he was apologizing over and over, yet the damage was done and owner kept saying please leave.   No money or apologize was turning that experience around quickly. Public shame will only be restored as believers raise the bar, resist the flood of obscenities flooding our modern times and praying to make a verbal difference.

                

So how does vulgarity, profanity and cursing defeat you? If you use language like this you are separating yourself from future success, your fellow man and God. If you talk like this at home you will talk like this in public. Even though this type of language is more culturally acceptable today then it’s ever been, does not mean everyone is like this. When we use bad language and words we reveal our shallow futile thinking and our ungodly character. God created our minds and hearts to reflect Him and give Him glory and when we allow ourselves to speak to each other and express our hearts with slang and vulgarity words and phrases we will limit our potential among men and God.

Our words create a path of destruction or success for our days. Words are our tools. The more tools you have in your tool chest the better job you can do in life with others.  When we allow ourselves to be exposed to words in media, movies and literature that a generation ago never tolerated we will pay the price sooner or later.  When we allow our children to be entertained by movies that should make us blush verses laugh we need to review our standards.  It’s time for the people of God to raise the standard of our thinking to a level like unto our God. The bedroom talk should stay in the bedroom and bathroom language when necessary should be decent and in context. Our words at all times should be honoring to our fellow man and our God.

A Sabbatical Journey of Rest.

Today I am officially on Day 3 of a 5 week break from ministry to others. Because of family dynamics I am on this journey without my wife or children. It is my second sabbatical break in my ministry. After serving 8 years straight it is truly nice to not have a sermon or bible study to prepare for around the corner. Part of my desire and hope is to withdraw and refresh, but I realize since I am not in a monastery of solitude for 5 weeks, that I still deal with people and relationships wherever I go. So this blog post and a few to follow are to share parts of my journey with those who know me or are just curious.
 
           I am staying in a wonderful guest home for missionaries in Bogart, GA. Part of my time away is to take a course in Hermeneutics. I also decided that I will try to eat meals with people without depending on typical restaurants and fast food places. I have already and plan to fast and pray, but when I eat find different contexts.  So I am open to ideas if you have any.  So last night I broke a fast by attending a Spaghetti dinner open to the community at the Greek Orthodox Church near Athens.
   
        Below is a short video and some pictures. This church only does this once a month and opens the doors to the community. I meet a man named Steve who was a greek member of the church. He and his wife Tina were in the very late 80's and very gracious to me. I discovered that their son in law was the priest of the church. I really did not know much about the Greek Orthodox church from an insider perspective, but after last night I certainly got one.  Father Anthony who married their daughter is the priest and as well a artist. All of the paintings in the church were done by him. Amazing art work. I also discovered that GOC ( Greek Orthodox church ) is very similar to my roots of being a Roman Catholic. Main difference is their pope is not viewed as infallible and if a priest gets married before they are ordained then they can be married. Interesting huh?

            One thing I would not fully embrace is their veneration of the saints. Even though they know their history of the great saints and martyrs of the faith (unlike most protestants) they tend to idolize them far more then I believe they should and seem to pray to dead saints including the virgin Mary.

        Anyway it was some interesting meal and time and during the dinner each month they invite different music and singing groups to come into the dinner to entertain. Therefore the video below of the Mad Dogs of Athens big band group.

Lagos Nigeria

Today I find myself living among 22 million people in one of the largest West African cities on the continent. This is day  4 of a two week trip here. I am here to learn , teach and instruct leaders. The original foundational reason for this trip was to take a masters level course at the largest seminary in Africa. Other reasons have been added to the trip since , but all to the glory of God. Most of the students here are called of God to prepare for ministry in the country of Nigeria, but many others also come from other nations as well. I meet the Founder of the Seminary who has been a missionary here for over 35 years. Gary and his wife have roots in the Nazarene church so there were many connections. They now live here the rest of their days while pastoring  a church as well as still involved some with WATS. Today I meet the academic dean who also teaches. She is an American here with a passion to help give African leaders the best education possible to prepare for ministry. The mission of the Seminary is very needed as  the vast majority of pastors in this country have never had any formal education regarding doctrine , church history or how to properly understand or study the Word of God. In this nation the prosperity gospel and hyper grace are embraced  by many who have never been rooted in God's Word. In the founders own words he said there is a need for there  to be dozens and dozens of these seminaries like West African theological Seminary here in this city alone. 

      It has been such a joy to learn here,.Today I was able to teach a one hour session in my ethics class as well as one hour about discipleship with others. As an example of my ethics class we have a case study before us we are to read and then write a paper on what should a man do with his 4 wives and many children after he receives  Christ as Savior?  Because Polygamy is legal and practiced still  through Africa ( mostly among Muslims and traditionalist ) how I does the church handle these kinds of ethical issues is very complex.
